Snow Shoe Club Commemorative Cup / Robert Hendery.
Snowshoes had long been the Amerindians' means of winter locomotion. Since snowshoes were well adapted to the topography and climate, Europeans adopted them early on. It was in the early 1840s that snowshoeing became a leisure and sports activity. In 1843, the English founded the first snowshoe club, the Montréal Snow Shoe Club.
