These
Itin?raires (itineraries), by Brothers Marie-Victorin and L?on, are the most important work ever produced in French on Cuban flora. The three volumes were published as part of the
Contributions de l?Institut Botanique de l?Universit? de Montr?al, in 1942, 1944 and 1956.
Although Marie-Victorin wrote them himself (except for the very first chapter, penned by Brother L?on), he insisted on equal billing for his colleague in recognition of his tremendous contribution.
The first volume of this travel journal is strictly chronological. In the second, some notes are presented by theme, but since Marie-Victorin had now discovered his "botanical paradise" in the eastern part of the island, he reserved the observations he made there for a third volume. His colleagues had to prepare his manuscript for publication, since he died shortly after returning to Quebec in 1944.
