1868:
Rising nationalism


In 1868, Carlos Manuel de C?spedes freed his plantation slaves, starting a rebellion against colonial Spain (the Ten Years? War).

Another emblematic figure, the poet Jos? Mart? (1853-1895) founded the Cuban Revolutionary Party. He died fighting the Spaniards.
