Pinar del Rio

In the Sierra de los Órganos
Marie-Victorin discovered the mogotes.

These mogotes loom on the horizon like the pipes of a gigantic organ.

In fact, they are the result of tremendous erosion that carved numerous caverns into the ancient mountains. Their ceilings were held up by enormous columns of rock that suffered less erosion because they were harder.

Over geological time, these ceilings collapsed around the columns, which became today's steep mogotes.
