Halloween

Pépo enquête!

Pépo, our Halloween star, is playing detective this year to try to figure out who kidnapped his sister Péponide. As part of his investigation, he'll be questioning the cucumber, melon and decorative gourd, all members of his big plant family, the Cucurbitaceae.

Your class can visit the exhibition and enter the pumpkin-decorating contest. Guaranteed fun and cash prizes to be won. Contest rules available on the Garden Website.

Insect-Eating Plants

Insect-eating plants have developed fascinating ways of adapting. Handling, observing and comparing different plants will allow students to understand how these adaptations work. The educator will make them aware of the importance of protecting biodiversity.

Humans have always found ways of using plants, in every age and in every country. This guided tour of the greenhouses will introduce students to some of these vital plants, some of which we eat!

First Nations Garden

Introduction to the First Nations

Enjoy a unique experience as you’re carried off to the “land of peace” in the First Nations Garden. Gatherings are a central part of Native culture. First Nations peoples come together to celebrate bountiful harvests, births and reunions after long winters spent in the forest. Come celebrate in the forest as you learn about past and present traditions among the First Nations!

The Great Gathering

The First Nations have always maintained close bonds with the forest. The Tree House and the First Nations Garden team up to celebrate these natural relationships. Your day of discovery will include two activities: Introduction to the First Nations and In the Land of the Giant Trees. The great gathering lunchtime will be complemented by games to explore the Arboretum. A very full day of outdoor fun for your students!

Welcome to Japan

Japan has a fascinating culture, with a tremendous emphasis on nature. In the superb setting of the Japanese Pavilion, experience some of that country’s customs. Sit on tatami mats and speak Japanese!

Tree Quiz

A game, puzzles and a race against the clock. A perfect opportunity to test what you know about trees. Which tree grows fastest? How can a ring help you tell the age of a tree? Can you think of an object made out of wood whose name begins with “Y”? Teamwork is the key to success!

It's Sugaring-Off Time

From Native wigwams to today’s sugar shacks, maple-syrup production may have changed, but the tradition and delicious taste remain the same! Students will discover how maple syrup has been made over the centuries. Finally, they’ll conduct some simple experiments to see how sap is made into syrup.

Travelling Fruit

What do a hot-air balloon, a hang-glider and a seed have in common? These inventions will introduce students to the original strategies trees have developed to colonize new spaces. They will play a game and learn about the surprising world of fruit and seeds.

In the Land of the Giants

Students will travel back to 19th-century Quebec, to the heyday of the brave raftsmen who risked their lives floating timber rafts down the St. Lawrence. They’ll learn how white pines, those giant trees that once filled Quebec and Ontario forests, were used. A voyage through time and space!
