Seedlings' Corner

The Library has a collection of more than 400 titles of interest to young readers and their teachers. We have illustrated works with simple explanations, picture books, storybooks and even games, to introduce them to the world of nature, especially plants. There's sure to be something to appeal to young people and the young at heart, starting as young as under 2 years old.

Multimedia Room

You can visit the Library's multimedia room and learn about the many multimedia resources available on horticulture, botany and landscaping. No appointment necessary! With our nine computers, more than 50 CD-ROMs and various software titles, you can consult encyclopaedic plant selectors, draw up your own landscaping plans and, for our younger visitors, learn about nature in an entertaining and interactive way. Some bibliographic tools (Index Kewensis, Hort-CD) provide access to specialized references. Three terminals are also hooked up to the Internet.

There are close to 200 titles in our video collection. You can view them in the multimedia room, using headphones, or in our small theatre, when it is available.

The computerized catalogue of our collections is not yet available, but you can consult the Virtual Garden Shed, with its many descriptions of the multimedia documents in the Library of the Botanical Garden.

Monographs

Plants are an important part of our day-to-day lives. We use them for food and medicine, to provide shelter and clothe ourselves and in our gardens. They are the vital backdrop to all the Earth's ecosystems. You can learn more about the importance and many roles of plants through the Library's 20,000 monographs, ranging from general to highly scientific, including professional references and beautifully illustrated volumes, on such themes as botany, useful and medicinal plants, ornamental gardening and landscaping. You can consult hundreds of titles on flowering plants or specific groups to find out more about the Botanical Garden's collections of live plants, such as our orchids and bonsais.

The computerized catalogue of our collections is not yet available in English, only in French.

You can also consult the Green Pages, which contains many bibliographies compiled from our collections of books.

Periodicals

The Library subscribes to nearly 500 periodicals. Some of them are highly scientific, while others deal with general gardening and landscaping topics, and still others are quite specialized, covering specific groups such as roses or cacti. They may be published annually, monthly or at other frequencies, and vary from simple newsletters to bound and magnificently illustrated publications. The complete periodicals catalogue contains close to 3,000 titles and 55,000 volumes. You can consult the database of indexed articles or Hort-CD, in the Library, to help you find what you're looking for.

Rare and Antique Books

The Library of the Montréal Botanical Garden has an exceptional collection of rare and antique books, mainly European, dating from the 17th to the 19th century. Many of these works include engravings or lithographs of botanical illustrations, hand-coloured with water colours. The collection is accessible only for specialized research, by appointment

Archives and historical collections

Conservation of institutional archives and historical collections is part of the informal mission of the library of the Botanical Garden since its inception in the 40s.

The slide library joining the library in 1986, the photographic archives were added to the various historical collections.

Completed in 2007, with a grant from the Quebec National Archives, and revised in June 2011, the general archive and historical collections inventory (1756-2005) of the Montreal Botanical Garden Library reveals the richness of the institutional heritage. The main archive is thus representative of the history of this important scientific museum founded in 1931 by Brother Marie-Victorin: correspondence of the curators Henry Teuscher and Marcel Raymond and of the directors (including Pierre Bourque), Guest Book, clippings, original drawings, thousands of photographs and slides, posters, various artifacts, etc. In addition to the main institutional fonds, other fonds or collections of individuals or organizations related to the institution are also listed: horticultural schools, various botanists, etc.

The inventory is available online in a PDF format for consultation.

A prior notice of at least 3 working days is necessary to consult the institutional archives and historical collections.

NEW! To learn more about the archives, the virtual exhibit:
