Watering your lawn
It is better to water the lawn less frequently but more abundantly. A good watering must penetrate the
full depth of the root zone. Sprinkling which merely wets the surface is to be avoided. Applying
2.5 cm (1 inch) of water over the entire area normally soaks adequately.
- Here's a tip:
- install same-size containers at various spots on the lawn; stop watering when
2.5 cm (1 inch) has collected.
- How often to water?
- There is no precise frequency, since each lawn has its specific needs. Lawn growing in
sandy soil, for instance, requires more frequent but less abundant watering (1.25 cm or 0.5 inch). Lawn
exposed to the south or southwest for example, or covering a steep slope, needs more watering. Check
soil humidity before watering. It should have dried out well into the root zone.
- The best time to water?
- The best watering time is early in the morning, before 8 a.m., giving a chance to
dry before the hot rays of the sun arrive. You can also water early in the evening, but watering
late in the evening or during the night is not recommended. Make sure the lawn is dry for the night
in order to reduce the risk of problems linked to fungus diseases.
- Will lawns turned yellow following a dry period become green again?
- YES. Thanks to a dormancy mechanism, grasses stop growing during a period of drought. The lawn
can be completely yellow for several weeks but turn green again after adequate
rain (several hours -- not just a shower) and as soon as climatic conditions return to normal. Avoid
all undue traffic on the lawn during this period, however.
