Pruning Roses

Roses are pruned to rejuvenate the stems and to give to the shrubs a balanced appearance. A good pruning diminishes risks of fungal diseases in letting the air and the light go through the plant, then the importance of pruning the stems over a bud pointing towards the outside. This way, the center of the shrub is not too dense.

Rose type At the planting time Following years
Tea Hybrids Choose 3 stems of same size forming a triangle.
Prune over the 3rd or 4th bud pointing towards the outside.
Keep 4 stems with 4 or 5 buds per stem.
After 8 to 10 years:
Eliminate a third of the wood.
Floribundas and Grandifloras Choose 4 stems of same size vase-shape.
Prune over the 3rd or 4th bud pointing towards the outside.
Keep 5 stems with 5 or 6 buds per stem.
After 8 to 10 years:
Eliminate a third of the wood.
Shrubs Spring time:
Eliminate fragile or winter-damaged stems or those x-crossing.
Keep the shape of the shrub balanced.

After 5 years:
Prune back some old stems to the ground.
Climbing Spring time:
Prune extremities of the main stems.
Prune small lateral stems, keeping 2 or 3 buds.
Dispose stems in fan shape.
