Shade Garden
Anyone who thinks it impossible to produce magnificent gardens in the shade will
find proof to the contrary here in this cool refuge from the sun.
On a sunny day, this garden offers the cool, refreshing shade of tall trees.
It is the perfect place to admire the first flowers of spring.
Collections of primroses, astilbes, hostas, ferns
and other plants that flourish in the shade carpet this garden.
A sinuous path and small footbridges spanning the bed of an old stream add to the secluded charm of the Shade Garden.
This garden was originally shaded by majestic elms, but had to be completely replanted in 1987 after they were ravaged by
Dutch elm disease.
Now maple, ash and linden trees have gradually repopulated the garden.
This garden is located along the east border of the Botanical Garden, located near
the Japanese Garden.
