Lacquer, Precious Resin

Lacquer is a substance with astounding properties collected from trees using traditional techniques, and applied to both utilitarian and decorative objects. Lacquerware exists in many countries, but in Japan this art has reached truly remarkable levels of refinement, a tribute to the finesse of Japanese esthetics.
The exhibition invites visitors to learn all about lacquer – how it is collected, processed and used – and to admire a superb collection of pieces made by members of the Japan Urushi Art and Craft Association.
