Open Windows on Japanese Gardens
At the Japanese Garden of the Montréal Botanical Garden

April 6 to September 3, 2001

Meija Garden, Japan

The Japanese Garden of the Montréal Botanical Garden will be presenting Open Windows on Japanese Gardens from April 6 to September 3, 2001. This collection of photographs and other items opens a window for a glimpse of another universe, over a thousand years old, combining nature, human artistry and the divine...

There are estimated to be over one thousand gardens in Japan, not counting the private gardens, and the very old gardens, destroyed by earthquakes. The art of creating gardens is an ancient skill here. Landscape architecture was apparently introduced to Japan as far back as the 6th century, along with Chinese Buddhist philosophy. Today, Japanese gardens are respected around the world as one of the highest forms of landscape architecture. Water, plants and stones are arranged to produce a pleasing harmony-nothing in a Japanese garden is left to chance. This exhibition introduces visitors to the essence of such gardens, their elements and symbolism.
