What can be more pleasant than a stroll through a lilac garden on a
fine day at the end of May! Take a whiff of the
gentle fragrance and admire the various forms and colours of the
panicles. To combine an agreeable outing and a
useful purpose, here is a map and a detailed list of the lilac
collection of the Montréal Botanical Garden.
We owe installation of the collection, in the 1930s, to Henry Teuscher,
the garden's first curator. The lilac collection,
of about 400 shrubs, presently covers an area of roughly 8 000 m2. It
consists of 20 species and close to 200 cultivars, making it a good
collection of the genus Syringa. Most of the shrubs are planted on a
gentle slope near the Flowery Brook. The plantations continue northward
up to the pond's edge.
