D'Arcy McGee (1825-68) Mourning Medal.
McGee was a journalist, political activist, poet, and public speaker in his native Ireland, the United States, and Canada. In 1857 he moved to Montréal where he established a newspaper and was later elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada. He attended the Charlottetown and Québec conferences and is a Father of Confederation. He was assassinated in Ottawa on April 7, and was buried in Montréal on April 14, 1868. The medal with McGee's image was worn by mourners at his funeral; photograph by William Notman.
