After winning the Canadian and American championships, Rubenstein was sent to represent Canada at the world championships in St. Petersburg, Russia. Rubenstein was detained by the police and told he could not compete because he was Jewish. The British ambassador intervened on his behalf and Rubenstein went on to win the championship.
