Extreme gardening! In spring 2005, a spectacular Crevice Garden was
added to the Alpine Garden. The stones are all arranged vertically, to provide perfect drainage and create shady zones. Under these conditions, we can
grow alpine plants that would not survive elsewhere in the Alpine Garden.
In nature, rock strata are sometimes pushed erect by movements of the Earth?s crust, and organic matter accumulates in the cracks that form. Mixed with
small rocks, it provides the kind of exceptionally well-drained substrate required by some plants. |
