A friendly meeting of botanists

Edwin F. Atkins, who came here from Boston in 1866, had interested botanists from Harvard University in producing new varieties of sugar cane. It was the start of a major scientific undertaking, the Atkins Institution, and the Soledad Botanical Garden.

News this morning! Dr. Thomas Barbour, Director of the Atkins Institution, Dr. E.D. Merrill of Harvard University, and the great traveller and botanist David Fairchild have arrived there and are urging us to join them.

We were very warmly received at Harvard House, managed by the Boston university, as was the adjacent botanical garden.

We all roamed through the arboretum like students on vacation. Under the young Baobabs, Brother L?on and Dr. Merrill discussed philosophy, while Dr. Barbour smoked as he inspected his realm.

The Ceiba pentandra is the largest tree in the Antilles. Its huge trunk and its rough grey bark make one think immediately of a pachyderm. Its role is like that of the Baobab in African flora. In Cuba, people use it as a metaphor for anything enormous.
