The Sierra Maestra is home to the Island?s highest mountains.

We set out by car this morning from the Colegio de la Salle de Santiago, to spend at least a day on the Loma del Gato, literally: "Cat Mountain". A "loma" is a mountain with a rounded summit, as opposed to the jagged peaks of a "sierra". A young teacher was waiting for us with some sturdy trail horses.

The Loma del Gato rises 900 metres. Not far from the summit, we started to see the lacy green parasols of Tree Ferns.

Only oil paints can capture the tropical forest: lush, dark, saturated greens, dappled everywhere with bright sunlight.
