Shrub Garden

The Garden's "old-timers"

This shrub, Fontanesia phillyreoides ssp. fortunei, is the Botanical Garden's oldest "child" still growing in the Garden. It arrived on June 1, 1936, in the form of a tiny seed donated by the New York Botanical Garden.

This doesn't make it the oldest plant on the site, though, for some of the trees were already growing here when the Garden was founded. The large elm next to the parking lot, for example, sprouted in 1885 and today is more than 120 years old.

Keeping track

Since the very beginning, all the plants added to our collections have been numbered when they arrive at the Garden.

Over the years, we have established a database for keeping track of each plant?s comings and goings.

Here you see the entry for Fontanesia phillyreoides ssp. fortunei, the 45th plant obtained in 1936. The information was recorded by Rita Dubé, secretary to Henry Teuscher, the Garden's first curator.
