A mountain rises: a 25-year climbWork on creating the Alpine Garden started in 1937, but was not completed until 1962. The exceptionally lengthy process was due to both the size of the challenge of building a "mountain" with very rudimentary resources and the long interruption caused by the Second World War. Meanwhile, police horses grazed on the site!
Clinker and fill were laid down as a foundation, with hundreds of sedimentary rocks arranged atop them. The rocks' eroded appearance creates the illusion that they have been here forever. |
