Peace Garden

A gift from the Turks

The Peace Garden, opened in 2000 thanks to the support of the Turskish community in Qy?bec, showcases two of Turkey's most celebrated contributions to world heritage: tulips, which spread from Istanbul throughout Europe in the 16th century, and splendid Iznik tiles, made using a complex process lost in the 17th century and rediscovered in the mid-1990s.

Iznik ceramics

From the 14th to the 17th centuries, potters in the town of Iznik, in northwest Turkey, turned out some of the most magnificent ceramics anywhere in the world. Their fame spread as far as the courts of Europe, which eagerly sought these lovely pieces made from clay of the finest white and covered in floral patterns in shades of blue, green, turquoise and red.

Sixteenth-century Iznik potters were famous for their work,
which they decorated with carnations, tulips, hyacinths and roses.
