Institut de recherche en biologie végétale (IRBV)

A unique affiliation

Few visitors would suspect that the Botanical Garden is home to one of Canada's largest plant research centres. In fact, it has eighteen full-time researchers, twelve of them professors with the Department of Biology at the Université de Montréal, and the other six, botanists employed by the city of Montréal. They all work at the Institut de recherche en biologie végétale - a fruitful partnership between a leading Canadian university and one of the world's major botanical gardens!

The little grey box that researcher Anja Geitmann is installing on this microscope is a microindentor, a device that she will use along with a microscopic probe to deform a plant cell and determine its physico-mechanical characteristics.

Their research fields

  • Wetland conservation
  • Filtering abilities of aquaticplants
  • Using willows to remove soil contaminants
  • Reforestation of abandoned farmland with fast-growing trees
  • Signal networks involved in plant reproduction
  • Mechanics of pollen tube development
  • Biological pest control as a means of limiting the use of chemical pesticides
  • First Nations ancestral knowledge and know-how ...

A fisheye lens was used for these stunning photographs of the canopy of a natural forest (left) and a plantation (right).
