In one of Agriculture Canada most impressive horticultural success stories, Felicitas Svejda developed and first tested the roses of her Explorer series at the Central Experimental Farm (CEF) in Ottawa to be hardy in tough Canadian climates.

Established in 1886, as an active research centre and home to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada headquarters, the Central Experimental Farm is a 400-hectare National Historic Site and a taste of rural Canada.

Rose breeders were active at the CEF over about 90 years, before and after Ms. Svejda's long career and testing rose varieties still continues.

Her Trial and Rose gardens have now been integrated to the Heritage Rose Garden were her roses along other climbing roses, ground covers, English roses, hardy roses and many ancient roses are grown today.
