Jean-Louis Beaudry was born in 1809 at Sainte-Anne-des-Plaines and left the family farm at 14 to work in Montréal. At 25, he opened up a store with his brother on Notre-Dame Street. People referred to it as “the store with striped shutters” because of its blue, white and red stripes.

He was a prominent businessman and was also one of the founders of the Banque Jacques-Cartier. He married Thérèse Vallée in 1835 and they had one son and four daughters. He died at 77.
