William Hales Hingston was born in 1829 of Irish parents. He studied medicine in Montréal and went on to obtain his diploma as a surgeon in Europe. He returned to Montréal at the age of 25. He worked as a surgeon at the Hôtel-Dieu Hospital and taught medical students.
As well as being a famous doctor, he was president of a bank and a railway company. He married in 1875. The couple had five children. He died in 1907.
