Gérald Tremblay, 41st mayor of Montréal

On November 4, 2001, Gérald Tremblay, leader of the Montréal Island Citizens Union, is chosen to head the new city of Montréal with 49% of the votes. Lawyer, businessman and former member of the National Assembly, Gérald Tremblay  thus became the 41st mayor which extends from now on to the whole island.

January 1, 2002 marks the official birth of this new entity made up of 27 districts with a population of 1.8 million, double the population of the former city of Montréal. Each borough had a council and a chairman.

Mayor Tremblay wanted the new city to work and urged everyone to favor the development of the metropolis. He initiated a major event, the Sommet de Montréal, gathering representatives from all over Montréal, to share a common vision of the city’s future.

The organization of the city was revised in December 2003. Decentralization of activities and services to citizens, gave more autonomy to the boroughs, respecting their identity. The city charter was modified accordingly.

On November 6, 2005, Montrealers re-elected Gérald Tremblay and his team with 53% of the votes. Sixteen borough mayors, members of the Montréal Island Citizens Union, were also elected.
