Tunguska: "What a Blast!"
Enlargement
The explosion of the Tunguska meteoroid occurred over Central Russia. |
On the morning of June 30, 1908, an object from the sky exploded over the Siberian forest near the Tunguska River. The heat from the explosion was so great that people living several tens of kilometres away thought their clothes were on fire! No crater or meteorite has been found, because the object volatilized before touching ground. Trees were uprooted and burned by the force of the explosion. When the first scientific expeditions to the area arrived, they discovered over 2 000 square kilometres of devastated landscape.
