Marcel Laurin (1923-1993)

Marcel Laurin (1923-1993)

Son of Georges-Philippe Laurin, Mayor of Saint-Laurent from 1938 to 1943, Marcel Laurin took over as Mayor on September 14, 1959, and held this position until 1990. Despite their confidence in him, the citizens who elected him had no idea that he would make their city the second-biggest in Quebec, particularly at the industrial level in the coming years.

A Saint-Laurent native, Marcel Laurin was born on January 18, 1923. Like his father, he graduated in Law from Université de Montréal and began his career as a notary in 1948.

Mr Laurin was a member of the theatre company Les Compagnons de Saint-Laurent. He also presided many institutions: the Law School of Université de Montréal in 1942, the Commission des écoles catholiques de Saint-Laurent (from 1956 to 1968), the Club Richelieu and the Saint-Laurent YMCA. In a few short years, Marcel Laurin acquired the experience enabling him to enter municipal politics and execute many projects.

The diversity of his work is eloquent. Here we need only think of the A1 financial rating the City received for its debt assessment from Moody's of New York, the construction of a first metro station in Saint-Laurent and the announcement of the creation of an industrial megacomplex called the Technoparc Saint-Laurent.

In addition to his local involvement, Marcel Laurin was an avid participant in the affairs of the Montréal Urban Community (MUC). With the MUC, he was a member of the Executive Committee, of the Public Finance Commission and of the Arts Council.

For many years to come, the citizens of Saint-Laurent will continue to see Marcel Laurin as the symbol of an era of modernization and of unprecedented economic and social development in the history of their city.

The City renamed one of its most important arteries in his honour. Accordingly, the section of boulevard Laurentien that runs through Saint-Laurent is now called Marcel-Laurin boulevard. Furthermore, the biggest park in Saint-Laurent bears the name of the City's most renowned mayor.
