Without a doubt, the stone industry is the oldest of Saint-Laurent's industries, with operations dating back to around 1860 and continuing for a full century. Workers initially had access to only the most basic stone extraction methods.
In 1903, a first crusher was installed, and until 1910 stone was removed only from the Saint-Laurent quarries, which were located south of Côte-Vertu boulevard and west of the CN tracks, where we now find Montpellier district.
Ideal because of the proximity of the railway, this industry peaked in 1936 with the extraction of crushed stone. Most notably, Saint-Laurent stone was used for paving at Dorval Airport and at Central Station in Montréal. |
